Debate #1 – August 2015

debateDebates. Why the do we even care about them outside of the Democrat vs. Republican context? I find that it’s just a chance for “like-minded” presidential hopefuls to bicker amongst each other for two hours and not say a damn thing. Thursday night was no exception.

We started off with the FOX moderators asking the candidates if they would run third party if they didn’t get the nomination. This was telling in how the stage would be set for the debate. A blatant attempt to Donald Trump and make him look like a fool, and of course Trump fell for it. Now, I’m no fan of Trump, I think he’s a blow hard, egotistical ass hat. That being said, I am extremely disappointed in FOX News attacking him the way they did. Megyn Kelly, especially, was a bit of a bitch. They handled themselves very poorly and it was apparent they went into the debate holding a grudge against Trump.

Trump gave straight, confident answers, sort of. He only told us what most of us want to hear, and his answers were very arrogant. Basically, “I’m super rich [which isn’t a problem in my book], everyone loves me [not really] and I did some shady shit with the system to get ahead in business [true].” He got a few jabs in on the others, as well as Rosie O’Donnell, but all in all he did pretty poorly.

Jeb Bush. Just, fuck no. Set aside the fact we do not need a dynasty when it comes to presidents. I mean I liked Dubya, sometimes, but there were a lot of things that I did not like about him. His brother Jeb is one in the same. He’s pro-open borders, pro-common core, his wife can barely speak english [I’ve been told], he’s a RINO, a wolf in sheep’s clothing and of course a Bush. Need I say more.

Chris Christie is another creature all together. New Jersey governor, RINO, hugger of Obama. It’s fair to say that he and Jeb are pretty much the farthest left of those in the debate. I honestly can’t remember all he said because I can’t stand the guy. He did get into it with Rand Paul over NSA spying. Long story short, Christie is all for it.

I used to like Rubio, and I will say that he probably has views that match a lot of my own. But come on. Even he basically wants amnesty. He was probably the most Presidential of all the guys though. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he get elected riding on the shoulders of the Tea Party and then basically thank them by somewhat jumping ship on some major conservative issues? I don’t know. I just don’t really like him anymore.

Governor Kasich seems like a beady eyed little kook. He loves big government and Obamacare apparently. The only reason he got the response he did when answering questions was because he had home field advantage.

Huckabee just won’t be President, plain and simple. Sorry Huckster.

Ben Carson did surprisingly well, I thought. He needs to work on his facts though. As I was talking to my brother afterwards and he pointed out that the USAF was formed in 1947, not 1940. Admittedly a small mistake, but it’s something that will be used against him in the future, especially from the Democrats that aim for the jugular.

Rand Paul got absolutely no time . I think he got a total of 5 minutes and some change total for the two hour debate. I think FOX News thinks he is a truther, an evil libertarian, he wants to legalize all the drugs, and he’s a hippie who is just a threat to the Republican establishment.

Scott Walker? Meh. He seems to be a pretty staunch conservative, in my opinion. Dealing with all the union bullshit in Wisconsin. I believe he is a man of his word and has more integrity than other established douchebag Republicans. Still not sure he will make it far in the nomination process though.

Ted Cruz? He’s my homeboy. From calling Mitch McConnell a liar on the Senate floor to reading ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ as a filibuster. [Side-note, best Dr. Seuss book period.] [Side-side-note, that was not a Megyn Kelly period joke.] Anyway, I may be a bit biased towards this shining example of a human being, but I think he gave the some of the best answers. Unfortunately, I still don’t know if he would be a good Republican nominee at this time.

I missed the pre-debate debate, but heard Carly Fiorina utterly killed it. Hopefully she will make it to the main debate next time. I am really hopeful that we will see the dream team of a Trump/Bush ticket and have another four to eight years of Democrat rule.
