Remember when Lyndon Johnson started the War on Poverty in 1964 and said the costs would be contained?

Remember when Ronald Reagan slashed welfare in 1981 because it was growing too fast?

Remember when Bill Clinton “ended welfare as we know it” sixteen years ago this week in 1996?

Well it is still there and will top $1 Trillion dollars in 2012. This does not include Social Security or Medicare.

Total means-tested welfare spending (cash, food, housing, medical care, and social services to the poor) has increased more than 17-fold since the beginning of Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty in 1964. Though the current trend is unsustainable, the Obama Administration would increase future welfare spending rather than enact true policy reforms.
